Wax Polyester

Wax polyester is a single application product, this basicly means that it requires no base coat. It is a hard wearing product that can be polished to a very high gloss.

Polyester base coat and top coat system

This combination of polyester products is perfect for metallic and similar finishes as the base coat provides a hard protective covering of the substrate where the metallic colour can be applied. Once the metalic colour is applied a polyester top coat is then used. Despite many peoples beliefs, this product is a very thin finish and does not cause as much discolouration as wax polyester.

Polyurethane.

Polyurethane is another hard wearing conventional lacquer that is normally used on work were polyester may not be compatible i.e. metallic, candy apple finishes.
Polyurethane is sometimes favoured as it is not as thick or brittle as polyester, unless specified pu is usually sprayed over a polyester base coat.
Pu comes in all gloss levels.

Nitro-cellulose

Nitro-cellulose is very much the traditional finish used on many musical instruments
and still used by some manufacturers today, excellent results can be achieved with nitro
but it is not as hard wearing as the poly finishes, nitro is also easily damaged or affected by other chemicals, so care is advised.

Pre-catalysed cellulose

Known as Pre-cat, this product is almost the same as nitro-cellulose but has a pre added catalyst to increase the drying times. Pre-cat also contains some chemicals which make it more stable than nitro - in simple terms, it's an improved product.

Oil and Wax

For a natural feel, oil or wax can be used to finish your guitar, preferably used on denser tropical timbers that have a figured grain pattern. There is a degree of maintenance to these types of finishes as the finishing process will need repeating according to wear.
Depending on the type of finish required, waterbased and acrylic products may also be used.
